It was a trademark Polser game this evening as our boys kicked off the 2002 Tournament with a convincing win.  As the #4 seed overall, Polser entered the 5th Grade Boys Blue Division with its highest ranking in three years of play.  First round action was a highly anticipated battle of the #4 and #5 seeds.  But the battle only lasted a half - this was Polser basketball tonight.

Homestead opened the game strong, driving the lane for the basket and converting the foul shot to jump out to an early 3-0 lead.  After falling behind 5-0, Polser adjusted the defense and got down to business.  Closing the gap, Polser trailed at the end of the first quarter 9-6.  The Polser defense took over in the 2nd period, controlling the boards and holding Homestead scoreless. Polser completed the comeback and grabbed a 12-9 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Polser press was just overwhelming. Polser jumped all over Homestead in the third quarter, scoring 4 quick baskets on turnovers and steals.  And there would be no let up the rest of the second half as Polser scored 10 points in each of the final two periods to double-up Homestead.  Tonight was perhaps the most balanced scoring game of the season as 7 of 10 Polser players scored.  Alex led the way with 12 points and Ryan added 6.  Dillon, Michael P. and Quinn each had 4 points. Reggie and Jack added 2 points each.  Now it's a rematch with Rainwater in second-round play!
SATURDAY / 02.09.02
We thought it would be a shoot-out... and it was.  Polser and #1 Rainwater battled from start to finish in a great basketball game.  Polser was ready but Rainwater was up to the challenge and held on for a narrow win in second round play.

Rainwater came out quick, using the fast break to jump to an early 6-0 lead in just over a minute.  Polser settled down, but Rainwater built the lead up to 10 points before Polser tightened the defense.  Polser battled back as Ryan scored 6, Dillon added 4, and Michael H. grabbed a rebound and made the follow-up basket to close the gap to 16-12 at the quarter.  Polser won the battle in the second period, controlling the boards and holding Rainwater to just 4 points.  Erick challenged the middle of the Rainwater defense for 4 points and Michael P. added 3 to complete the comeback, as Polser trailed by a single point at halftime 20-19.

It was the third quarter that would ultimately undo Polser.  The Polser press just couldn't get in gear, and several mental errors led to 4 easy baskets for Rainwater.  Despite the hard work, Polser was unable to stay close as Rainwater closed the third leading 30-23.  The Polser defense again clamped down in the fourth, creating turnovers and shutting down Rainwater's big gun.  On offense the boys created some great scoring opportunities, and Polser closed the gap to three.  Polser continued to charge, but these critical shots in the final minutes didn't go in for Polser.  Rainwater added two late free throws to seal the win. It was another balanced scoring effort for Polser as Ryan, Dillon and Erick all had 6 points.  Michael P. added 5 while Reggie, Alex and Michael H. scored 2 points.  Now Polser will have to gear up for the long road to the championship.

It was simply a shocking collapse in the final minute of play that left Polser players, coaches, and parents stunned.  Leading with 59 seconds to play, Polser made three consecutive unforced turnovers and Indian Creek finally took advantage of the third gift to walk into the final four with a 30-29 win.

As uncharacteristic as the end turned out to be, Polser started the game with perhaps the most dominating first four minutes of play against any ranked opponent.  The team looked sharp and ready to play, passing the ball and creating quick scores.  Polser jumped out to an 8-0 lead before Indian Creek was able to adjust and get back into the game.  The Indian Creek defense finally tightened down, but Polser held a 10-8 lead at the quarter.

The second quarter was a defensive battle as both teams worked hard to find the open shot.  Indian Creek won the quarter by a basket to pull even at the half 16-16.  In the third quarter, the Polser Press turned up the tempo, creating some turnovers and steals as Polser scored 11 points in the period.  But the defense failed to make critical stops and Indian Creek kept it close.  It was Polser with a slim 1 point advantage after three quarters 27-26.

The fourth quarter was frantic for both teams and it was painful to watch as both teams took poor shots and made bad passes.  The teams exchanged just a single basket and battled down to the final minute of play.  With the one point lead, the ball and the game in hand, Polser made one and then a second turnover.  But Indian Creek missed the shots and Polser controlled the rebounds to dodge these bullets.  Then Polser made a final  and fatal  turnover that would end the season. Indian Creek finally made a shot to take the lead with 19 seconds remaining.  Polser pushed up the court for the final shot.  But it was not to be.  Polser could have and should have won this game.  It was an early tourney exit and unfortunate end to an otherwise outstanding season for Polser.
